LARQ: The Water Bottle That Cleans Itself...Whaaaat?

Being that my Instagram feed is full of the latest trends and discoveries in health and wellness, the LARQ brand had been on my radar for a while. It wasn’t until I was surprised with my very own bottle as a Christmas gift that I actually took the time to really research what they were all about though.

Advertised as the World’s First Self-cleaning water bottle, LARQ claims to neutralize up to 99.9999%* of harmful, odor-causing bacteria (in adventure mode). And how does it do this may you ask? Using UV-C LED technology.

Still going whaaaat? So was I.

UVC-LED technology is used to disinfect air, surfaces, and water by emitting light at a level that can destroy bacteria. This technology is often used in hospitals as a safer alternative to mercury or chemical disinfectants. In the LARQ bottle, this technology can be found in the lid.

How it works:

Charge it

The bottle has a rechargeable lithium polymer battery. One charge will last up to 1 month for Normal Mode and 10-12 days for Adventure mode. The cap will flash yellow when it needs to be recharged.

Press it

Press the button on the top of the cap to start the purification process. You press once for Normal Mode, which takes 1 minute. You press twice for Adventure mode, which takes 3 minutes. In Adventure Mode, the bottle has a 3x increase in UV-C dosage. The cap will light up different colours for each mode’s purification cycle.

The bottle also self cleans every two hours.

But does it actually work?

Now obviously I don’t have the tools and equipment to actually test my water for bacteria to see if the LARQ bottle is doing what it says it is. It’s also important to note that the LAQR bottle does not contain a filter, so can’t remove heavy metals or fluorides from your water. However, the technology has been tested by third-party sites, so I’ve decided to trust those who don’t go whaaaat when they hear UV-C LED technology and assume that it’s doing the job. Either way, I’ve been loving my LARQ bottle, and I’ve noticed I’ve been drinking more water since getting it. So for someone who definitely does not drink enough water, the sheer inspiration to stay hydrated that LARQ is giving me is good enough for me.
